Senior Community Kicks Off Golf Tournament for Residents
Carlsbad, CA (PRWEB) August 29, 2008 -- Barry Machado won the first round with a score of 16, while Wilma Weiser's score of 18 was good enough to take first place in the women's division. With those opening scores, it was game on at the "La Costa Glen Cup" golf tournament at La Costa Glen Carlsbad, the continuing care retirement community in Carlsbad, Calif.
The ongoing tournament for residents will be held each month at the "Links at La Costa Glen," a six-hole pitch-and-putt course built on a scenic bluff overlooking the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife area. The course opened earlier this year at the community and is used on a daily basis by many residents. The average age of residents at La Costa Glen is 80.
According to Peter Ballantyne, activities director for the community, the residents will compete once a month in the ongoing tournament. Golfers will accumulate points each month, with the best male and female golfers determined in the final championship round at the end of the year. The top golfers will have their names engraved on a perpetual trophy that will be displayed at the community and updated each year.
"A substantial number of residents enjoy playing golf, so we organized a friendly competition to add a little extra incentive," Ballantyne said. "Because the course is 100 percent synthetic, it allows our residents to play year-round. We look forward to sponsoring this tournament each month and awarding the trophy at the end of the year."
The first completely synthetic golf course in San Diego County, the course is expected to save the community more than 1.1 million gallons of water each year. Maintenance on the synthetic lawn is minimal, which takes two people one day every three months to clean and buff the grass, spread additional sand if needed, and make any necessary minor repairs. Natural turf, on the other hand, needs to be rolled once or twice a year and requires constant mowing and watering.
"One of the biggest positives is that the residents feel they are doing something tangible to conserve resources for future generations," Ballantyne said. "They have embraced the green movement in a big way, and believe it's never too late to 'go green.'"
The Links at La Costa Glen is one of several new amenities added to the community with the completion of the fourth and final phase earlier this year. Also new to La Costa Glen are the Brentwood Movie Theatre where movies are shown at daily matinees and Friday night shows, a new indoor heated swimming pool with spa, sauna, yoga and massage facilities to complement the community's outdoor pool, and a complete fitness center with full-time wellness and fitness instructors. The final phase also features the new Fairway Clubhouse with additional dining rooms, as well as a lounge and wine cellar-inspired private dining room for special occasions.
La Costa Glen is a continuing care retirement community for people 62 years of age and older. The community is located at 1940 Levante St. in Carlsbad. For more information, please call La Costa Glen at 800-333-7550 or 760-704-6000 or log onto www.LaCostaGlen.com.
